What a proper asphalt driveway install includes
- Removing the old surface and excavating soft or organic soil, not just paving over it.
- A compacted crushed-rock base. Guides commonly cite 4 to 8 inches, more over weak soil.
- Geotextile fabric where the subgrade is clay-rich or soft, to keep base rock from sinking in.
- Hot-mix asphalt laid and rolled while hot. Residential driveways are commonly 2 to 3 inches compacted.
- A slight slope, commonly around 2 percent, so water runs away from your garage and foundation.
- Finished, compacted edges. Unsupported edges are where driveways usually start to crumble.
Why the soil under Escondido driveways matters
North County soils change from street to street. Hillsides are often sandy decomposed granite, which drains well but erodes if water isn't managed. Valley floors can be softer alluvium, and some areas have clay-rich soil that swells when it's wet and shrinks as it dries.
Asphalt is flexible, so it follows whatever the ground does. Over clay or soft fill without enough base, that shows up as sunken wheel paths and spider-web cracking within a few years. A good contractor looks at your soil before deciding how deep to excavate and how much base to build.
How long it takes
A typical residential driveway is often excavated, based and paved in one to three days, depending on size, access and how much material comes out.
Plan to keep cars off it for a few days. In hot inland weather, new asphalt stays soft longer, so avoid turning your wheels while parked and keep trailers, kickstands and jack stands off it for the first few weeks.
What to ask a contractor before you sign
- What's your CSLB license number? (Verify it at cslb.ca.gov.)
- How deep will you excavate, and how thick will the base and the asphalt be after compaction?
- Will you use fabric, and how will you handle any soft spots you find?
- Where will the water go?
- Does any of the work touch the sidewalk, curb or driveway approach? If so, who pulls the city permit?
- What's included in the written estimate, and what would count as a change order?
FAQ
Asphalt Driveways Questions
How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Escondido?
National cost guides put new asphalt driveways at roughly $3 to $7 per square foot installed, with some guides citing more. Excavation, new base, tear-out of an old driveway and difficult access all add to that. See our asphalt paving cost guide for the breakdown, and get a written estimate from a contractor for your exact site.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
With a solid base, good drainage and regular sealcoating, asphalt driveways commonly last 15 to 20 years or more. Driveways built on thin base over poor soil can fail much sooner.
Asphalt or concrete for a driveway in North County?
Asphalt usually costs less up front, flexes rather than cracking in large slabs, and is easy to patch. It needs sealcoating every few years. Concrete costs more up front and needs less routine maintenance, but cracks are harder to repair invisibly. Many homeowners get estimates for both.
